Oshima Airport in the Izu Islands to be named "Tokyo Oshima Camellia Airport"!

 <Tokyo Oshima Camellia Airport>

 The Tokyo Metropolitan Government called for nicknames from May 28 to June 11, and received  2,639 applications for nicknames from 2,236 people, excluding duplicates. The Oshima Airport Nickname Candidate Selection Committee selected the candidates and the metropolitan government made the final decision.

According to the metropolitan government, more than 60% of the applicants used camellia as a motif, and they decided to use hiragana for its familiarity and softness. They also decided on "Tokyo Oshima" because Oshima belongs to the metropolitan government and they wanted people to know the charm of the island.

Other than camellia, the most popular motifs were Anko-san, Mt. Mihara (sacred fire), Geopark, and Baumkuchen. The winner of the contest will receive a certificate and a round-trip ticket between Chofu Airport and Oshima Airport. In addition, five winners will be chosen by lottery from among the applicants and will receive Oshima's marine products as souvenirs.

 According to the Management Division of the Remote Islands and Ports Department of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Port and Harbor Bureau, "We have received many comments from people who have fond memories of their trips to Oshima and who would like to visit Oshima once the new coronavirus infection is under control.
